Government School System

Government schools are part of Singapore’s mainstream MOE education system.

International students may apply to mainstream primary schools and secondary schools through specific routes. For many families, the attraction is an English-medium environment, local education system, lower fees compared with many international schools, and possible long-term progression within Singapore.

P1–P6

Primary School

Students build foundations in languages, Mathematics, Science, arts, music and social learning. Primary 6 students usually take PSLE.

PSLE

Primary School Leaving Examination

PSLE is an important milestone that affects secondary school posting and subject levels.

S1–S4/5

Secondary School

Singapore has moved to Full Subject-Based Banding. Students enter through Posting Groups and may take subjects at different levels based on ability.

Post-Secondary

After Secondary School

Students may progress to junior colleges, Millennia Institute, polytechnics or ITE depending on results and direction.

AEIS / S-AEIS

International students mainly enter by level and application route.

For Primary 1, international students follow the P1 Registration process. For Primary 2 to Primary 5 and Secondary 1 to Secondary 3, students usually apply through AEIS. S-AEIS is the supplementary exercise for selected levels.

AEIS

For international students seeking admission to mainstream schools in the following academic year. Common levels are Primary 2–5 and Secondary 1–3.

S-AEIS

A supplementary admission exercise for entry within the same academic year. Common levels are Primary 2–4 and Secondary 1–2.

Admission is not guaranteed

Placement depends on test performance, available vacancies and MOE’s posting arrangements.

Preparation

Age, target level and CEQ must be checked carefully.

Primary applicants need to meet the required Cambridge English Qualifications score before applying for the primary-level AEIS. Students also need to prepare Math and, for secondary applicants, English and Math based on the target level.
